Time to Be Nice!

Day One

Yesterday was the first day of our little project. I had my first opportunity to be nice before 8:30. I ended up doing three nice things instead of just one.

First, I sincerely complimented a co-worker on her outfit. She looked great! Second, when I was dropping off samples for work I held the door for another person who was dropping off several large boxes. Finally, last night I made several dozen cookies for the husband to bring to work tonight.

The big, bad husband has a job where he has to work outside for some of the time no matter what the weather is like. It's been insanely cold here for the last week and BBH has been working nights. The fact that he's done this without any complaining is amazing to me because I would never stop agonizing over the fact that I was freezing to death. I think that's enough of a good deed, but he actually spent more time outside last night than he needed to just to help someone else get a bunch of stuff cleaned up and fixed.

So day one was a success.

The Time is Now

A few weeks ago over dinner the big, bad husband and I had a discussion about how the world could potentially be a much better place if each person did something nice for someone else each day. Something outside of themself. Something that pushed them to think about someone else's needs above their own. This may sound very tree-hugging, hippie-ish, but it's really not. We're just going to see what happens to us and the world around us by trying to do good things for other people.

We decided to challenge each other to do just that. It probably should have been a New Year's resolution, but we didn't talk about it until a few weeks in. It makes sense to me to start it with the beginning of the next month (not that we haven't done nice, kind things since then but we're just documenting it now). The things don't have to be large. We're not trying to save the world. We just want to force ourselves to stop being so selfish.

So tomorrow we're going to start being nice.
